Gasketing is used on a very wide range of applications, especially enclosures and enclosure doors, to provide a protective seal between the enclosure or housing and the door or cover. The seal is commonly required to help prevent dust or moisture entering the application and causing damage. Gasketing also helps to counter manufacturing tolerances and minor imperfections in panels or doors where the two surfaces meet.

Choosing the most appropriate type of gasketing for a particular application is important and involves consideration of indoor or outdoor location. The enclosure design and how much closure force is to be used will determine the firmness of the sponge or hardness of a solid gasket that will be required.
